Opened in 1925 on Monroe, Wisconsin’s historic Courthouse Square, the Eugene Hotel was built as a 46-room hotel and quickly became one of the city’s most prominent gathering places. At the time, the three-story building stood at the forefront of modern hospitality, offering private plumbing and telephones alongside what was described as Monroe’s most elaborate electrical system. After the hotel closed in 1981, its upper floors remained largely underutilized for decades while commercial uses continued at street level. A century after its original opening, the building has been restored as a 25-room boutique hotel, preserving its historic lobby, interior light well, skylight, and other character-defining features while retaining ground-floor commercial space and expanding neighboring Baumgartner’s Cheese Store & Tavern. Supported by Federal and Wisconsin Historic Tax Credits, the rehabilitation returns the Eugene to its original use and restores a longtime landmark at the heart of downtown Monroe.
